Top Thrill Dragster, a roller coaster at Cedar Point amusement park in Sandusky, Ohio, was involved in a serious accident on August 15, 2021, when a metal object flew off the ride and struck a woman in the head. The ride has been closed since then, and Cedar Point announced in September 2022 that Top Thrill Dragster "as you know it" was closed for good and would be retired. The Ohio Department of Agriculture conducted an investigation and found that the accident was caused by an "instantaneous overload fracture" of a bolt holding in a plate on the ride, and no sanctions were recommended against Cedar Point. Cedar Point has since announced plans to transform Top Thrill Dragster into a triple-launched roller coaster using linear synchronous motors, and the modified coaster is scheduled to reopen in 2024 as Top Thrill 2.
