United Airlines Flight 93 was hijacked by four al-Qaeda terrorists on the morning of September 11, 2001, as part of the coordinated terrorist attacks that day. The hijackers intended to crash the plane into a federal government building in Washington, D.C., most likely the U.S. Capitol Building or the White House. However, after learning about the other attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon through phone calls, the passengers and crew attempted to regain control of the aircraft. During the struggle, the hijackers chose to crash the plane into an open field near Shanksville, Somerset County, Pennsylvania, at 10:03 a.m., killing everyone on board but preventing the plane from reaching its intended target. The crash site is now commemorated by the Flight 93 National Memorial to honor the bravery of those on board
