Zuko's mother, Ursa, was banished from the Fire Nation after making a deal to save Zuko's life. When Fire Lord Azulon ordered Ozai to kill Zuko as punishment for Ozai's insolence, Ursa concocted a poison that led to Azulon's death, sparing Zuko. In exchange, Ozai demanded that Ursa leave the Fire Nation forever and never return, threatening to kill her and her children if she tried to take them with her
. After fleeing, Ursa returned to her childhood village, where she met her first love, Ikem (who had changed his appearance to escape Ozai's wrath). Ursa made a deal with the spirit called the Mother of Faces to receive a new face and a new mind, erasing her memories of her past life, including her children. She took on the new identity of Noriko and lived peacefully with Ikem (now Noren), having a daughter named Kiyi, who is Zuko and Azula's half-sister
. Later, in the Avatar comics "The Search," Zuko discovers the truth about his mother and reunites with her. Ursa chooses to have her original face and memories restored, and they begin to rebuild their relationship. She also confronts Ozai, now powerless and imprisoned, showing no fear of him
