what happened with the speaker of the house

According to multiple sources, Kevin McCarthy was removed from his position as Speaker of the House in a vote of 216 to 210 on October 3, 2023. This is the first time in U.S. history that a Speaker of the House has been voted out of office in the middle of a congressional term. After the vote, Patrick T. McHenry (R-N.C.), a close ally of McCarthy, was named temporary speaker or speaker pro tempore. McHenry will hold the job for a limited time, up to three legislative days in this case, until Republicans can present a nominee for speaker. Once Republicans decide who to nominate for speaker, the House would have to vote as many times as it takes for a candidate to receive the majority of those present and voting for speaker. It is unclear who will be selected to succeed McCarthy, but the next speaker probably wont be a Democrat. The situation is fluid and changing quickly, but the House is unlikely to continue to operate as usual without a new speaker being selected.
