When you pull down the balloon at the bottom of the model, several things happen:
- The space inside the bottle increases, simulating the expansion of the chest cavity during inhalation.
- Air is drawn in through the straw and fills the balloon, representing the intake of air into the lungs.
- The balloon inside the bottle inflates, mimicking the expansion of the lungs during inhalation.
- The diaphragm, represented by the balloon at the bottom, contracts and pushes the air out of the lungs, causing the balloon to deflate when you release it.
- This model demonstrates how the lungs work, with the balloon at the bottom acting as the diaphragm, which expands and contracts to fill the lungs with air and then empty them out again.
