If a Vice President resigns, the following things happen:

  • The Vice Presidents office becomes vacant.
  • The President does not automatically appoint a new Vice President. Instead, the 25th Amendment to the Constitution provides that the President shall nominate a Vice President who shall take office upon confirmation by a majority vote of both Houses of Congress.
  • If the Vice President resigns and there is no replacement, the Speaker of the House of Representatives would become next in line for the Presidency under the Presidential Succession Act.

It is worth noting that a Vice Presidential resignation is a rare occurrence, having only happened twice since 1789.
