If the AFL final is a draw at the end of the fourth quarter, the teams have a six-minute break, followed by additional time consisting of two three-minute halves plus time on. After the first three-minute half, teams switch ends without a break and play immediately resumes. If the scores remain tied after these two halves, additional similar periods of extra time are played until a winner is decided. During extra time, each team is allowed 10 additional interchange rotations per two three-minute halves, which do not carry over if unused. This overtime system applies to all AFL finals matches from 2016 onward, replacing the previous rule where a drawn Grand Final was replayed the following week. Thus, a winner is always determined on the same day by continuing with multiple extra time periods if necessary until one team outscores the other.
