If the AFL Grand Final is a draw at the end of regular time, the game does not end as a tie. Instead, the match resumes after a six-minute break with two extra time periods, each lasting three minutes plus time on. The teams change ends after the first three-minute half with no additional break, and if the scores are still tied after these two periods, the process repeats with further pairs of three-minute halves until a winner is decided. This rule ensures the Grand Final is always decided on the same day without a replay, a change made in 2016. Interchange caps are also applied during extra time, with each team allowed 10 additional interchanges per two-period extra time segment.
