If you accidentally put diesel fuel in a gasoline-powered car, it can cause several problems to your cars fuel system. However, diesel fuel probably won't destroy your engine, though it may require replacing some parts. Here are some of the things that could happen to your car's fuel system:
-
Difficulty starting: A car with diesel mixed into its gasoline may have difficulty starting.
-
Reduced power: The car may exhibit reduced power.
-
Smoke from the exhaust: The car may emit smoke from the exhaust.
-
Catalytic converter failure: The excess unburnt fuel and particulates the diesel leaves in the exhaust may cause the catalytic converters to fail.
While there is little risk of damage to your vehicle if you accidentally fill it with diesel fuel, it can clog up a gasoline engine because diesel fuel is denser. If you happen to mistakenly fill your car with diesel, do not start the engine and have it towed to a mechanic. Attempting to drive a vehicle with diesel in a gas engine will cause it to stall as soon as the diesel reaches the fuel system.
