When you drink too much water, a condition called water intoxication or overhydration can occur. This happens when there is an excessive amount of water in the cells, including brain cells, causing them to swell. As a result, you may experience symptoms such as confusion, drowsiness, headaches, nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea. Overhydration can also lead to a dangerous drop in blood sodium levels, a condition known as hyponatremia, which can cause seizures, coma, and in extreme cases, death. Additionally, overhydration can disrupt the balance of electrolytes in the body, leading to nerve and heart issues, including low heart rate and high blood pressure. Athletes, especially endurance athletes, are more at risk of overhydration due to excessive fluid intake during intense physical activity. If you suspect overhydration, its important to look for symptoms such as cloudy thinking, muscle weakness, and headaches, and seek medical attention if severe symptoms occur.
