The exterior shots of the Overlook Hotel in the movie "The Shining" were filmed at the Timberline Lodge in Oregon. However, the hotels interior was inspired by the Ahwahnee Hotel (now known as the Majestic Yosemite Hotel) in Yosemite National Park and was constructed in a studio in England. The Stanley Hotel in Colorado is the hotel that inspired Stephen King to write "The Shining," and he stayed there for one night in October 1974. The Stanley Hotel was not used as the filming location for the movie, but it was used for the 1997 television mini-series adaptation of the novel.
