2S in Indian Railways refers to the second seating class for passengers. It is a seating class in which the seats are in the form of benches, which can be joined or may have a little distance between them. The seats of the 2S class may or may not possess a cushion. This class comes under the reserved section and is the lowest reserved class in Indian trains. One should not confuse 2S class with the general coaches on Indian trains. A 2S seat in train will not offer sleeping facilities as it is only for seating. It is a good option for a short (4-5 hours) journey. For long journeys, one can book a sleeper/AC berth as they need some sleep. Usually, 2S coaches have seats in a 33 layout, and some 2S coaches can also have a seating arrangement of 23. One has to pre-book their seat in 2S class, and 2S seats can be booked online.
