504 Plan
A 504 plan is a formal plan developed by schools to provide support and accommodations for students with disabilities, ensuring their access to education and removing barriers to learning. The name "504 plan" comes from Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, which prohibits discrimination against individuals with disabilities in organizations receiving government funding. Unlike an Individualized Education Plan (IEP), a 504 plan is less detailed and does not include learning objectives, goals, and academic performance statements. However, it outlines specific accommodations, modifications, and services that students with disabilities can receive to help them participate in educational and school-related activities. These plans can apply to a wide range of disabilities, including physical, mental, and academic disabilities, and are designed to give students equal access at school. Students eligible for a 504 plan include those with conditions that limit daily life activities, such as self-care, walking, seeing, breathing, hearing, speaking, or learning. The plan is tailored to meet the specific needs of the child and typically includes specific accommodations, supports, or services, as well as the names of the school professionals who will provide each service and the person responsible for ensuring the plan is implemented.
