The bearcat is a mammal native to South and Southeast Asia, also known as the binturong. It is a member of the Viverridae family, which includes civets and genets, and is neither a bear nor a cat. The binturong is a medium-sized mammal with a thick coat of coarse black hair, short, stout legs, and a bushy and prehensile tail that is almost as long as its body. They are agile in the canopy but less adept on the ground, walking flat-footed like a bear. Binturongs are omnivores and feed on insects, birds, and fruit. They are uncommon in much of their range and have been assessed as vulnerable on the IUCN Red List due to a declining population trend.
