A buckeye leaf is a type of leaf found on the Ohio Buckeye tree (Aesculus glabra) and the California Buckeye tree (Aesculus californica) . The Ohio Buckeye tree has opposite, palmately compound leaves that are clean and medium green in spring. Each leaf has five leaflets, and they are a little bit smaller than the leaves of the horse chestnut tree. The California Buckeye tree has palmately compound leaves with five (rarely seven) leaflets. The Ohio Buckeye tree is the state tree of Ohio, and a round white decal with a green depiction of a buckeye leaf is applied to Ohio State football helmets. The wood of the Ohio Buckeye tree has been used for fuel, paper, artificial limbs, splints, wooden ware, boxes, furniture, veneer, and sometimes for lumber. People have carried buckeyes in their pockets to prevent rheumatism and bring luck.
