A CT (computed tomography) scan is a diagnostic imaging exam that uses X-ray technology to produce detailed images of the inside of the body. It combines a series of X-ray images taken from different angles around the body and uses computer processing to create cross-sectional images (slices) of the bones, blood vessels, and soft tissues inside the body. CT scans can see nearly all parts of the body and are used to diagnose disease or injury as well as to plan medical, surgical, or radiation treatment. They are particularly well-suited to quickly examine people who may have internal injuries from car accidents or other types of trauma. CT scans are painless and noninvasive, and the whole process typically takes about 30 minutes.
