what is a chanticleer

A Chanticleer is the unique moniker and mascot for Coastal Carolina Universitys athletics teams. It is a proud and fierce rooster. The name was inspired by Chaucer's "Canterbury Tales," specifically "The Nun's Priest Tale". In the story, the chanticleer is described as a rooster with a redder comb than fine coral, a black bill that shone like a jet, and legs and toes like azure. The English professor who chose the Chanticleer nickname did so because it met the criteria of similarity to South Carolina's Gamecocks.
