Coastal Carolina Universitys mascot and athletics teams are called the Chanticleers, which is a proud and fierce rooster. A chanticleer is simply a rooster, and Coastal Carolina's nickname is inspired by Chaucer's "Canterbury Tales," specifically "The Nun's Priest Tale". The chanticleer was described in the story as having a redder comb than fine coral, a black bill that shone like a jet, legs and toes like azure, nails whiter than the lily, and feathers like burnished gold. Coastal Carolina's official colors, teal and bronze, somewhat resemble the physical description of Chaucer's chanticleer.
