A Chanticleer rooster is the unique moniker for Coastal Carolina Universitys mascot and athletics teams. The Chanticleer is derived from the proud and fierce rooster character in Geoffrey Chaucer's "Canterbury Tales". The English professor who chose the Chanticleer nickname wanted it to meet the criteria of similarity to South Carolina's Gamecocks and allude to the literary figure. Simply put, a Chanticleer rooster is a rooster pronounced as SHON-ti-cleer.
