A civil wedding is a non-religious, legal marriage ceremony presided over by a legal official, such as a judge, county or court clerk, or a government representative. It is different from a religious wedding ceremony, as it does not incorporate religious or cultural elements. Civil ceremonies can be held anywhere, including courthouses or city halls, and the marriage will be recognized in all 50 states. Depending on the state requirements and the couple's wishes, a civil ceremony and wedding share similar aspects but technically aren't the same.
