A Class A drivers license is a type of commercial driver's license (CDL) that allows drivers to operate any combination of vehicles with a gross combination weight rating (GCWR) of 26,001 pounds or more, provided the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of the vehicle(s) being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds. This includes vehicles under Class B and Class C, any single vehicle with a GVWR of more than 10,000 pounds, and any trailer bus, with endorsement or more than one vehicle, with endorsement. In most states, a Class A CDL also allows the driver to operate any vehicle with a semi-trailer or trailer with two or more axles, and any combination of vehicles with a GVWR greater than 26,000 pounds, provided that the GVWR of the towed vehicle is in excess of 10,000 pounds. A Class A license is the most permissive commercial license and allows the holder to drive for compensation (i.e., for their job) .
