A commitment ceremony is a type of wedding ceremony in which two people commit their lives to each other, but it is not legally binding. It is almost identical to a traditional wedding, where two people declare their love and commitment for one another and exchange vows. The only difference is that a commitment ceremony is not legally binding, whereas a wedding is. Commitment ceremonies are very real marriage ceremonies, without the stress and red tape of becoming legally married on the same day you share your vows. Couples who couldn’t legally get married by the state or the church due to their race or sexual orientation often chose a commitment ceremony. Nowadays, many couples take this route to bind themselves to one another without taking the legal steps that marriage requires.
