A deadhead pilot is a pilot who is being repositioned to take their assigned flight from another airport. Deadheading is the practice of carrying a transport companys own staff on a normal passenger trip so that they can be in the right place to begin their duties. Deadheading crew members must be uniformed and ready for duty if called upon. Deadhead pilots have an assigned seat just like the passengers and receive the same food as a passenger. Although deadhead pilots are not actively working while being deadheaded, they are considered to be on duty throughout the flight and are compensated for their time.
