A double pole switch is an electrical switch that has two connections to two separate circuits, essentially functioning as two switches in one. It has the capability to interrupt both poles of the electrical connection, the phase and the neutral, making it suitable for applications where both live and neutral wires need to be simultaneously cut off. This is particularly useful for isolating appliances safely, especially for large appliances such as ovens, washing machines, and refrigerators. In contrast, a single pole switch only interrupts one pole of the electrical connection, typically used for switching lighting on and off. Double pole switches are more common in industrial settings or factories, but they can also be used as a safety shut off for residential appliances.
