A Fenian in Ireland refers to a member of a 19th-century Irish nationalist secret society dedicated to the establishment of an independent Irish Republic through armed revolution. The term "Fenian" derives from the Fianna, legendary warrior bands in Irish mythology led by Fionn MacCumhail. The Fenian movement, formally known as the Irish Republican Brotherhood (IRB) in Ireland, emerged in the 1850s and was characterized by its commitment to overthrow British rule in Ireland. It was closely linked with the Fenian Brotherhood, an allied organization among Irish immigrants in the United States. The Fenians aimed to create a democratic Irish Republic based on universal male suffrage and were prepared to use force to achieve independence.
