In English usage, a finca refers to a piece of rural or agricultural land, typically with a cottage, farmhouse, or estate building present, and often adjacent to a woodland or plantation. The term has recently gained the colloquial meaning of a holiday home in a rural setting, situated on the Spanish mainland, the Balearics, and the Canary Islands, and throughout the countries of Spanish-speaking Latin America. A Spanish finca is officially the general name for "a plot (small or large) with or without any kind of building". In Spain, a finca refers to a type of property built on rural or rustic land instead of urban land, and it usually means a fairly large piece of land with a cottage, small house, or estate already built on it. Despite being originally constructed for agricultural use, nowadays a finca will often be used for recreational purposes.
