A first-generation college student is someone whose parent(s) did not complete a four-year college or university degree. The U.S. Department of Education defines first-generation college students as undergraduates whose parents never enrolled in postsecondary education. However, some colleges and universities use a different definition, so its important to ask your admissions counselor, academic advisor, or a faculty member to learn more. If your parents took a few college classes or even completed community college, you will often be considered first-gen. Being first-gen may also have greater saliency for some students more than others and at different phases in their education. First-gen students may face challenges related to navigating college culture and academic expectations, but they also bring unique strengths and resources to their college experience. Many schools and organizations offer resources and programs to support first-gen students.
