A GED diploma is a high school equivalency diploma that certifies academic knowledge equivalent to a high school diploma in the United States and Canada. It is an alternative to a traditional high school diploma and is earned by passing four subject tests in language arts, math, social studies, and science. The GED credential shows that the test-taker has the same knowledge as a traditional high school graduate. Passing the GED test gives those who do not complete high school or who do not meet requirements for a high school diploma the opportunity to earn a Certificate of High School Equivalency or similarly titled credential. Many government institutions and universities regard the GED test credential as the same as a high school diploma with respect to program eligibility and as a prerequisite for admissions. However, the U.S. military has higher requirements in admissions for GED test-takers to compensate for their lack of a traditional high school diploma.
