A haploid cell is a cell that contains a single set of chromosomes. In humans, only the egg and sperm cells are haploid, and they contain 23 chromosomes each. Most cells in humans are diploid, meaning they have two copies of each chromosome. Haploid cells are produced during meiosis, a type of cell division that reduces the number of chromosomes in a parent diploid cell by half. When a sperm fertilizes an egg, the genetic material is combined in the resulting zygote cell, which ultimately undergoes development into a new person. In some insect species, such as wasps, bees, and ants, males develop from unfertilized eggs and are haploid, while females develop from fertilized eggs and are diploid.
