Proteinuria is a condition where there is a high level of protein in the urine. A normal amount of protein in the urine is less than 150 milligrams per day. If there is more than 150 milligrams of protein in the urine per day, it is considered proteinuria. Proteinuria can be a sign of kidney damage or other serious medical conditions. However, there are also relatively harmless conditions that can cause proteinuria, such as dehydration, intense exercise, or exposure to cold temperatures. The albumin-to-creatinine ratio (ACR) test is usually used to measure the amount of protein in the urine. If higher amounts of protein are found in multiple urine tests over time, or the protein levels in the urine are increasing, additional testing may be required. It is important to diagnose and manage proteinuria early to prevent further kidney damage.
