A Las Vegas residency is a series of concerts performed by an artist at one location, usually a venue in one of the bigger resorts on the Las Vegas Strip. The artist who performs on a concert residency is called a resident performer. Residencies have been a staple of the Las Vegas Strip for decades, pioneered by singer-pianist Liberace in the 1940s and Frank Sinatra with the Rat Pack in the 1950s. Celine Dions A New Day... is the most successful concert residency of all time, grossing over US$385 million and drawing nearly three million people to 717 shows.
Las Vegas residencies are not limited to music performances. Comedians can also have residencies in Las Vegas, although it is not as common as music residencies. When an artist has a Las Vegas residency, they sign a contract with a resort on the Strip, agreeing to do a specific number of shows at the resort's venue for a certain period of time. Some residencies last years, while others are just a couple of months.
There are many current Las Vegas residencies, featuring some of today's biggest stars such as Adele, Garth Brooks, Carrie Underwood, Usher, and Maroon 5.
