A laser jammer is a device that returns a "no response" or a cosine error when a police LIDAR gun is used to target a vehicle. LIDAR uses infrared light to calculate how far away an object is, and the amount of time it takes for focused light pulses to bounce off a target and return to the gun can determine speed. Laser jammers detect a police laser beam, decode the signal, and transmit a reply. If this bogus return signal is at the correct frequency and the same pulse-repetition rate (PRF), it confuses the LIDAR gun and causes it to receive a "no speed" reading or an error for up to 10 seconds. Laser jammers must have a clear, unobstructed view of the road ahead and should not be recessed or hidden behind anything except IR acrylic. They must be level and perpendicular to the road ahead and kept clear of dirt and debris.
