A martyr is someone who suffers persecution and death for advocating, renouncing, or refusing to renounce or advocate, a religious belief or other cause as demanded by an external party. The term "martyr" originates from the Quranic Arabic word "shahid," which means "witness" and is also used to denote a martyr. In Islam, a martyr is viewed as a man or woman who dies while conducting jihad, whether on or off the battlefield. The term "martyr" can also be used more broadly to refer to someone who suffers greatly or is killed for their religious or political beliefs.
