A maul is a type of contact situation in rugby that occurs when the ball carrier is held by one or more opponents and one or more of the ball carriers teammates holds on (binds) as well. The maul is formed when a player with the ball goes into contact with a defender, and while both players remain on their feet, at least one more player from the attacking team joins the contact. Once formed, the maul must move towards a goal. According to World Rugby Laws, a maul can take place only in the field of play and consists of a ball-carrier and at least one player from each team, bound together and on their feet. The maul is one of the most effective set moves in rugby and can be used to create space for attacking play.
