A MET (metabolic equivalent) is a way to measure the intensity of an exercise or activity by comparing the rate of energy expended during the activity to the rate of energy expended at rest. One MET is defined as the energy you use when you’re resting or sitting still, which is approximately 3.5 milliliters of oxygen consumed per kilogram of body weight per minute. An activity with a MET value of 4 means you’re exerting four times the energy than you would if you were sitting still. METs are used to describe the functional capacity or exercise tolerance of an individual as determined from progressive exercise testing and to define a repertoire of physical activities in which a person may participate safely, without exceeding a prescribed intensity level. MET scores are also used to show an individuals level of cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF), or the ability of the heart and lungs to supply oxygen to muscles during physical exertion.
