A "monkey nut" is another term for a peanut, especially when it is still in its shell. The term is commonly used in the UK and refers to the pods of the peanut plant (Arachis hypogaea), which usually contain two seeds. Monkey nuts grow underground unlike true nuts that grow on trees, and they are actually legumes, related to beans and lentils. They are encased in a rough, brown shell and are high in protein, healthy fats, vitamins, and minerals. Monkey nuts can be eaten raw, roasted, or boiled and also processed into peanut butter, flour, and oil.
