what is a nit in poker

In poker, a nit is a player who uses an extremely tight strategy, playing very few hands and aiming to only get involved in big pots with monster hands. Nits often enter the pot with less than 10% of holdings. They are disliked by many players because they do nothing but fill a seat that could otherwise be filled by a fish. Nits miss too many bets and never get information, which can be a disadvantage in a game of information like poker. They leave money on the table, especially when playing in private games, as nobody wants to have the nit in a seat that could otherwise be filled with fresh blood. Being called a nit is not necessarily a big insult in poker, but it is generally not a compliment either.
