A perceptual region is an area defined by perception and feelings, rather than based on objective geographic characteristics. It is also known as a vernacular region. These regions exist in the public imagination but do not exist as clearly defined specific locations. Perceptual regions are not as well-defined as formal or functional regions and are based on peoples perceptions. They are often based on feelings and prejudices that may or may not be true. For example, the southeastern region of the United States is often referred to as "the South," but the exact boundary of this region depends on individual perception. Perceptual regions exist at a variety of scales, from global regions to regions within a single town.
