A philanthropist is someone who donates substantial resources, often including time, expertise, and financial resources, to a particular cause, area, or social issue in a way that is focused, sustained, and designed to support meaningful change within a given issue or problem. Philanthropy is a form of altruism that consists of private initiatives for the public good, focusing on quality of life. Anyone can be a philanthropist, regardless of their wealth or status, as long as they give of their time, talent, money, or skills to make positive change happen for humanity. Philanthropy can take many forms, including long-term donations to charities, enabling systematic changes that help solve elements of global issues, or supporting fundraising efforts at work or school. While philanthropy is meant to be selfless, modern philanthropy does face its fair share of criticism.
