Piebald deer are a type of deer with white spots on a pigmented background. They are not true albinos, as they still have some pigmentation. Piebaldism is a genetic abnormality that causes the unique coat pattern, and it is a rare condition that affects less than 2% of deer. Piebald deer can have varying amounts of white hair, with some being almost completely white with small brown patches, while others have just a few small white spots. They can also have physical abnormalities such as shortened or crooked legs, hooves, and spine, and are often born with these deformities. Piebaldism is a recessive trait, and both parents must carry the recessive gene for there to be a chance of producing piebald fawns. Piebald deer are not to be hunted and killed because of superstitions that they may curse future hunting experiences.
