A pyrolytic oven is a type of self-cleaning oven that uses high temperatures to burn off baked-on residue, leaving only ash behind. The oven heats up to about 400 to 500°C, heating the baked-on bits until they carbonize and turn to ash – a process called pyrolysis. The ash can then be vacuumed or wiped out of the oven with a damp cloth. Pyrolytic ovens are considered more convenient and time-saving, and therefore more cost-effective than traditional ovens that require manual cleaning. However, because of the high temperatures, they produce smoke and require a high amount of energy. Pyrolytic ovens are safe to use, as they are designed with many additional layers of insulation, which ensures any residual heat is contained.
