Radical Hysterectomy

A radical hysterectomy is a surgical procedure used to treat various gynecological cancers, including cervical cancer and ovarian cancer. During this operation, the surgeon removes the uterus, cervix, part of the vagina, and the parametrium (the connective tissue that surrounds the cervix). Additionally, the ovaries, fallopian tubes, and nearby lymph nodes may also be removed. The procedure can be performed using different techniques, such as a traditional approach with a large pelvic incision. Most women with cervical cancer are treated with a radical hysterectomy to ensure as much of the cancer as possible is removed. The procedure is considered a major surgery and should be performed by experienced surgeons. Complications may include blood clots, severe bleeding, injury to other internal organs, reaction to anesthesia, infection, and early menopause if the ovaries are removed. The standard treatment for early-stage cervical cancer, including stage I cervical cancer, is a radical hysterectomy.
