A radon test kit is a device used to measure the levels of radon gas in indoor spaces to assess potential health risks. There are two general types of radon test kits:
-
Short-term kits: These kits measure radon for 2-90 days for quick results. They are useful for initial screening, but the results may not be as accurate as long-term kits.
-
Long-term kits: These kits measure radon in your home for over 90 days and are more likely to tell you your home’s year-round average level. The longer the test, the better the results will reflect your home and lifestyle.
Radon test kits can be purchased online, in many retail or hardware stores, or ordered through the National Radon Program. Some state radon programs offer free or discounted test kits to the public, and free test kits are sometimes available from local or county health departments. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) recommends hiring a qualified tester if you are buying or selling your home, but you can also purchase a radon test kit from a hardware store and do it yourself.
In California, radon test kits can be purchased at most larger hardware stores, from a Certified Radon Service Provider, or online directly from a laboratory/manufacturer. The Radon Programs partner laboratory is offering short-term test kits for $14.95 to California residents.
