A rebuttal in writing is a response to an opposing argument that demonstrates why their present stance or claim in an argument is incorrect. It is an opportunity to counter an opposing argument and present the most compelling evidence to support your position by highlighting the weaknesses of their views. In order to present a fair and convincing message, you may need to anticipate, research, and outline some of the common positions (arguments) that dispute your thesis. If the situation calls for it, you will present and then refute these other positions in the rebuttal section of your essay. When you rebut or refute an opposing position, use a three-part organization: state the opponents argument, show why it is incorrect, and provide evidence to support your position. A rebuttal is not just restating your position, but rather showing your opponent why and how they are incorrect in the first place.
