Ringworm is a type of fungal skin infection that causes a circular, ring-shaped pattern on the skin. It is not caused by a worm, despite its name. The fungi that cause ringworm can live on skin, surfaces, and on household items such as clothing, towels, and bedding. Ringworm often spreads by direct skin-to-skin contact with an infected person or animal, or by contact with infected soil. Symptoms of ringworm include a circular, itchy, and scaly rash with raised, bumpy, scaly borders. Ringworm can be treated with antifungal medication, which is available either over the counter or as a prescription. To prevent ringworm, it is recommended to keep the skin clean and dry, wear flip-flops in locker rooms and public showers, and change socks and underwear at least once each day.
