A rook can refer to two different things: a chess piece and a bird.

  • Chess Piece: The rook is a chess piece that can move any number of squares horizontally or vertically without jumping, and it may capture an enemy piece on its path. It is represented as a crenellated turret in the West and is almost universally called a "castle" by non-players and those new to the game.

  • Bird: The rook (Corvus frugilegus) is a member of the family Corvidae in the passerine order of birds. It is a large, gregarious, black-feathered bird, distinguished from similar species by the whitish featherless area on the face. Rooks nest collectively in the tops of tall trees, often close to farms or villages, the groups of nests being known as rookeries. They are highly gregarious birds and are generally seen in flocks of various sizes. Males and females pair-bond for life and pairs stay together within flocks. In the evening, the birds often congregate at their rookery before moving off to their chosen communal roosting site.
