A seroma is an abnormal accumulation of serous fluid in a dead space containing plasma and lymphatic fluid. It is a common postoperative complication, particularly in breast cancer and plastic surgery. Seromas are usually found near the site of a surgical incision and can form soon after surgery or, sometimes, weeks later. The exact causes of seroma formation are not fully understood, but most agree there are a few factors that influence their development. Surgical procedures that disrupt or remove larger areas of soft tissue typically have higher rates of seroma development. Seromas are not often dangerous, but they can cause pain and discomfort. If the seroma is large, its size may cause discomfort. Although not necessarily cause for alarm, seroma should be looked at by a doctor. Small seromas often regress into the body on their own, but larger ones may require treatment. Treatment options include needle aspiration, which is draining the fluid with a needle, but this can increase the risk of introducing infection to the area.
