A sleeper cell agent, also known simply as a sleeper agent, is a spy or operative placed in a target country or organization who does not undertake an immediate mission. Instead, they live undercover as a normal citizen, often for many years, blending into everyday life without drawing attention to themselves. They wait in a dormant state for activation by a predetermined signal or instruction from their sponsor. During their dormancy, sleeper agents acquire jobs, identities, and build relationships and careers that may later prove useful for intelligence gathering, sabotage, espionage, or other covert activities. They do not actively spy or steal information until activated, making them difficult to detect because they appear just like ordinary people. A group or team of such agents is often referred to as a sleeper cell. In essence, sleeper agents "go to sleep" in the target environment and then "wake up" to carry out missions at a later time, usually when the sponsor needs them for a significant operation. This long-term infiltration strategy allows them to penetrate deeply into key organizations or communities, potentially achieving high-level access and influence.
