A stye, or hordeolum, is a painful red bump on the edge of the eyelid that is caused by an infection of oil glands in the eyelid. It can look similar to an acne pimple and may be tender to the touch. Styes are often filled with pus and can be managed at home with warm compresses, but some cases may require treatment by an eye care provider. Styes usually last one to two weeks and will typically go away on their own, but in cases where they don't, an eye care provider may need to drain them and prescribe antibiotics to reduce the infection. It's important to always wash your hands before touching your eyes to prevent the spread of bacteria.
