A stye, also known as a hordeolum, is an inflamed oil gland on the edge of the eyelid, where the eyelash meets the lid. It is a red, painful lump that may look like a boil or a pimple and is often filled with pus. Styes are caused by an infection of oil glands in the eyelid, commonly by the bacterium staphylococcus. They can be managed at home in many cases by applying a warm washcloth to the closed eyelid for several minutes multiple times a day and gently massaging the eyelid. However, if the stye doesnt start to improve after 48 hours or if redness and swelling involve the entire eyelid or extend into other parts of the face, it is advisable to contact a doctor. Styes usually go away on their own, but in some cases, an eye care provider may need to drain it. It is important to avoid wearing eye makeup or contact lenses while having a stye or chalazion.
